CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE

Vol. 21 NO.  1    April 2009

                                                Year of Jubilee

2010 is our 50th year as the Maine District. Until 1960, we were part of the New England District. This is a year of rest and celebration. This year, our district, mission areas, and local churches will focus on both rest and celebration, so we can refocus on what God has for us in the future.

During District Assembly on May 12th (7 PM) – 14th, you are invited to join us at our South Portland church as we celebrate what God has done during the past 50 years.

Camp Meeting will continue that celebration from June 23rd (7 PM) – 27th at the China Lake Conference Center with Steven Manley speaking. Kate Jordan & Soul Venture from the Toledo, Ohio area will be leading us in worship. We will be singing songs from the past 50 years. There will be something for everyone.

Looking forward to a Great Celebration!

     You are loved and appreciated,

     Cecil Jones

A Men’s Prayer Rally will be held on June 19th. The rundown will be morning worship service, prayer and share, lunch, afternoon workshop with questions and answers, and evening fellowship at a Sea Dogs game. The cost will be $24 which includes a two hour “all you can eat” buffet at the game. Seating at the game is limited. E-mail Jim Tabone at nasnexus@vmdirect.com.

We are preparing for our District Children’s Camp. This year, it will be back at the China Lake Conference Center on August 8th – 13th. Our theme this year is “God’s Creation: Where the Wild Things are”. We are looking for counselors. It is very rewarding to be a part of making a difference in children’s lives. We need both male and female counselors, but the greater of the needs is for MALE counselors. Come on, GUYS, these kids are worth making time for.

Does anyone know what happened to the archery equipment that belongs to the children’s camp? Please call and let me know if you know anything about this item.

Camp is a wonderful ministry. I’ve met so many adults whose Christian testimony includes children’s camp.

NOW is the time for churches to begin raising money to help with children’s camp for those who want to go. If you have any questions, please contact us.

Greetings in the name of Jesus!

“Behold, I will do a new thing. Now it shall spring forth… Isaiah 43:19

It was my privilege in January to attend the Leadership Conference in Louisville Kentucky representing the Maine district. These are the days of change in the way we do missions. I will be sharing the new changes with you in our upcoming convention. New things are happening, but the thing that never changes is the mission of the church of the Nazarene, to reach the lost with the good news of Jesus Christ.

As many of you know the Work and Witness team to Haiti scheduled to leave in January is in the process of re-scheduling for October. God closed one door and opened another allowing us to still be part of the Haiti relief effort by collecting Crisis Care kits, clothing, medicine and cleaning supplies to take to the Compassionate ministries warehouse in Pennsylvania. A team of 20 with a loaded 14 foot U-Haul truck arrived at Fawn Grove church on February 10th. In the several days that followed, we accomplished the goal that director, John Borgal had for us. The team was able to assist “above and beyond” his expectations, allowing him the freedom to do other projects that had been waiting for his attention. It was a blessing to be a part of that ministry.

March 31st was the end of our church year. Local NMI president’s reports should be arriving soon. These reports are due on April 10th. Please note the information about delegates to convention and memorial roll pictures. On behalf of the district NMI council, we express our appreciation for your sacrificial giving to missions so that missionaries may continue to serve, sharing the love of Jesus with others. Thank you for all your efforts.

April will find us busy preparing for convention. The NMI/NYI conventions are scheduled for Friday, May 14th at 7:00 PM and Saturday, May 15th at 8:30 AM at South Portland Church of the Nazarene. The speakers are our LINKS missionaries, David and Marquita Mosher. Nazarene Publishing House will not be at convention, but will be sending the materials that churches usually order prior to convention. NMI will have a table with materials and people to assist you in placing your orders. Please come prepared with your church information, including the number used when billing your church. NMI will not be accepting payment for your orders. Nazarene Publishing House will bill each church directly.

April is mission education. Mission education helps to inform the church of the needs of the world and how the church is meeting those needs. Easter offering was for this.

May is the medical plan to care for our missionaries.  Memorial Roll, Distinguished Service awards and Gifts of the Heart all support the medical plan.

June is World Evangelism Broadcast. WEB is a ministry which reaches people in 74 countries, in 31 languages, sharing the good news of Christ.

The rest of the scripture from Isaiah 43:19 is “shall you not know it. I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” Praise God for all that He does. NMI is looking for the new thing that God wants to do on the Maine district and in our lives that we might better serve Him and you.

In His Service and yours,

Cheryl Dunning, District NMI President

Our District Sunday School Convention on Saturday, April 24, 2010, at our Augusta church, is going to prove to be A Dynamite Day for Disciplers. The day will have one hour, or less, of business (you know, ballots, reports, etc)! Seriously! The rest of our time will feature inspiration and instruction from two top flight disciple makers.

Dr. D. Michael Henderson, author of two great books: A Model for Making Disciples-John Wesley’s Class Meeting and Making Disciples One Conversation at a Time will speak twice during the morning. Then, the venerable, Dr. Chic Shaver, will present his “Witnessing without Fear” seminar in the afternoon. (1:00 PM – 5:00 PM)

Whether you’re Sunday school staff or not, this day is for you! Things will kick off at 8:30 AM. Coffee and donuts will be available before that. Lunch will be on your own. Our presenters will have materials available for sale.

Make the connection! It’ll be dynamite!

Yours for “Making the Connection”,

Dick Devendorf
